Old Cairo Day Tour

Travelocity Egypt

Cost per person: $50.00 Price includes: Private guided Ancient Egypt tour of the Pyramids, Memphis, and more Hassle-free private hotel pickup and transfers from Giza and Cairo Enjoy the full attention of a private guide Flexible start times to suit your availability. Price excludes: Tomb entries, Pyramid interiors, gratuities, and all food and drinks. Your guide will be waiting for you to take you on a tour of the city of Cairo. Coptic Cairo is a unique area within Old Cairo that features a concentration of Christian churches and other sites dating from the centuries between the decline of the pharaonic religion and the arrival of Islam, during which time Egypt had a Christian majority. Much of Coptic Cairo is built around the Fort of Babylon, using parts of its original wall structure. Here there are also six churches dating back to the Early Christian period. The Hanging Church, or the Church of the Virgin Mary, was constructed in the ninth century to 'hang' precariously over the ramparts of Babylon; however, due to rising ground levels surrounding these walls, much of this hanging effect has been lost. Another notable church is Saint Sergius', which dates back to the fifth century. Further along lies the Ben Ezra Synagogue—the oldest synagogue in Cairo, established in the ninth century at what some believe may have once been the location of King Solomon's temple (or alternatively, according to tradition, the spot where Pharaoh's daughter discovered baby Moses amongst the rushes). Your final destination before returning home will be the citadel - an imposing mediaeval stronghold situated atop steep chalk cliffs overlooking Cairo...

On display is a remarkable collection spanning 5,000 years of art—the largest and most valuable assemblage of Egyptian art worldwide. It features over 250,000 authentic artifacts, including exhibits devoted to King Tut’s treasure trove of gold and jewels, preserved untouched in his tomb for over 3,500 years until its discovery during excavations in the 1920s. The next stop on your journey is the historic district known as Coptic Cairo. This distinctive neighborhood within Old Cairo boasts numerous Christian churches and landmarks dating back to the period bridging the end of Pharaonic rule and the rise of Islam, when Christianity held sway as Egypt's dominant faith. Much of modern Coptic Cairo stands atop Fort Babylon, preserving remnants of its original stonework along the way. Here lie six venerable churches tracing their origins to the dawn of Christendom itself. Among them lies the Suspended Church (or "Church of the Virgin Mary"), whose lower level appears suspended above bustling streets below...
