Kyzyl-Kala, also known as Qyzyl Qala ("Red Fortress"), located in modern-day Karakalpakstan, Uzbekistan, was an ancient fortress in Chorasmia built between the 1st and 4th centuries AD. This smaller fortress lies near Toprak-Kala, approximately 1 km to the west, and was constructed during the same period, likely serving as defensive fortification for Toprak-Kala. Kyzyl-Kala underwent restoration efforts in the 12th century. A recent modernization project aims to recreate its original appearance. As part of the "Fifty Fortresses Oasis" complex in present-day Uzbekistan, this historical landmark played significant roles until falling under Mongol rule after the Conquest of Khwarezmian Empire led by Muhammad II of Khwarezm (r. 1169, 1200–20).
Toprak-Kala, situated in modern-day Karakalpakstan, Uzbekistan, served as both an ancient royal residence and administrative center of Chorasmia around the 2nd or 3rd century CE. Archaeological discoveries here include murals, coinage, and archival records. Spanning from the 1st to the 5th century CE, its rich history makes it one of the most important sites within the region's cultural heritage. Like Kyzyl-Kala, Toprak-Kala forms part of the renowned "Fifty Fortresses Oasis" cluster found across contemporary Uzbekistan.
This archaeological area comprises three fortifications dating back to the 4th century BCE...
